The Vicar of Dibley is set to return for a new special as part of this year’s Comic Relief.

The new edition of the popular sitcom will see Geraldine Grainger [Dawn French] try to be named the Bishop of Dibley, following the recent decision by the Church of England to ordain female bishops for the first time.

The one-off short, currently in production, will air on Red Nose Day, Friday 13 March.

A source told the Daily Mail: “Geraldine’s character assumes she is a shoo-in to become the Bishop of Dibley but there are some other very unexpected names in the frame. Some big names have been cast as the rivals but to name them would give away the joke.”

The Vicar Of Dibley was last seen on our screens as part of the 2013 Comic Relief programme, in which Geraldine travelled to London to petition the church to permit women bishops.

The new episode will be the first since the death of actor Roger Lloyd-Pack – who played farmer Owen Newitt – in January 2014.
