Phoenix Nights WON’T be returning
Co-writer Dave Spikey says he has heard nothing about the mooted live shows for Comic Relief.
Phoenix Nights co-writer Dave Spikey says rumours of the sitcom’s return are wide of the mark.
An article in The Daily Mirror last month claimed that Peter Kay was in talks to stage seven Phoenix Nights-themed live shows next year, with one of the shows being televised for Comic Relief.
But in an interview with Giggle Beats today to promote his new tour, Spikey – who wrote the show with Kay and Neil Fitzmaurice – says he has heard nothing about the mooted live shows.
He said: “This sort of story surfaces every now and again – there have been a few things like this over the years. A couple of years ago there was talk of a film. I think I’d have heard by now if that was going to happen. Personally I think it’s just Peter being a bit tongue in cheek.”
When asked whether he’d reprise his role as Jerry St. Clair if Kay picked up the phone, Spikey said: “That’s what I’m known for, but it was 10 or 12 years ago now.
“It’s been a long time; you have to draw a line under things in case you can’t do them justice if you go back to them. I’m obviously still proud of it, though.”
