Award-winning sketch show Horrible Histories will return with a series of themed specials, it has been confirmed.

The children’s comedy series, based on the books by Sunderland author Terry Deary, is midway through its fifth and final run on CBBC – but the show will be quickly revived with a 45-minute special on the First World War.

The episode will be aired later this year as part of the BBC’s 100-year commemoration of the war.

It will feature a sketch based on the Christmas Day football match between British and German forces, BroadcastNow say.

The series’ co-production company, Lion TV, confirmed at the Children’s Media Conference in Sheffield that they are also hoping to producing more specials, particularly to mark landmark dates.

According to the British Comedy Guide, the 800th anniversary of the signing of Magna Carta, which will fall in June 2015, is “a prominent possibility.”

The Horrible Histories cast are currently working on Yonderland, a comedy-fantasy series for Sky1.
