Cadbury launch lolly stick joke competition on Twitter…
Cadbury Dairy Milk Ice Cream launched ‘Britain’s Biggest Joke Competition’ today as they set about reviving the lolly stick joke tradition – 25 years after its demise!
In an initiative designed to ‘reboot the nostalgic summer experience’, Cadbury will introduce new lolly-stick jokes into their products from 2013, and have took to Twitter to find the perfect new gag to kick-start the project in May.
With only 140 characters to work with, organisers hope the social networking site, used by comedians such as Gary Delaney, Adam Bloom and Tony Cowards to sharpen their gags, will act as the ideal platform to create snappy jokes and puns in the same tradition as the originals.
Entering the competition is simple: just add the hashtag #lollyjoke to your tweet.
And after a public vote, the winner will scoop a £5000 prize with their gag immortalised onto an 18 carat gold lolly stick. Non-edible, we presume…
Comedy reviewer Bruce Dessau, who has been researching comedy trends in social media, endorses the move: “There has never been a better time to revive the tradition of the lolly stick joke. Short form text mediums like Twitter have focused people on delivering bite size wit and shown us that a joke doesn’t have to be long to be good.
While the comedian delivering a gag in a club might add to the humour, lolly gags are simple enough for anyone to tell.”
Comedian Adam Bloom added: “What worked was the innocence and cheek combined. They had to be silly enough for small children but clever enough for older kids and adults.”
Stick jokes were phased out from 1988 but will return next year.
Tweeters can submit their gags from today at https://twitter.com/#!/goldenlollyjoke. Entries close on Wednesday 9th May at midnight.
