Hebburn wins regional RTS award
BBC2 sitcom Hebburn has won Best Drama Production at the RTS North East & Border Centre Awards.
The North East series, written by comedian Jason Cook, beat off competition from Vera, The Paradise and Wolfblood to scoop the gong.
Cook collected the award alongside cast members Chris Ramsey [Jack], Neil Grainger [Gervaise] and Victoria Elliott at an event at the Hilton Hotel, Gateshead – just a few miles from where the show was filmed.
The judges praised Hebburn for its “originality, its authentic cast and its lovingly accurate portrayal of life in a Northern town”, adding: “We felt Hebburn is a classic in the making.”
Cook later announced the news on his Twitter page, writing:

Last month BBC2 ordered a second series of the North East sitcom after it proved a ratings hit on Thursday nights.
Speaking at the time, Cook said: “There was always a longer storyline in my mind for the characters, and during filming of the first series I had a chance to start writing more about them.
“Once the actors brought them to life, it was easier to start putting those ideas onto paper.
He added: “The cast all did a such a great job with the first series, I could write for them for the rest of my life.”
A second, six-part series of Hebburn is due to air this autumn, with a Christmas special to follow.
Filming begins this summer.
