Viz co-creator Simon Donald is bringing out a new stand-up comedy DVD.

Donald, who worked on the comic until 2003, is releasing his latest Edinburgh show, Simon Donald’s School of Swearing, a new hour of comedy about naughty words.

In an interview with Giggle Beats earlier this year, Donald said: “School of Swearing goes right back to 2004, really. Me and [former Viz co-editor] Alex Collier were going to do an Edinburgh show together. We didn’t know what we were going to do, but we come up with the title Swearing is Both Big and Clever.

“We ended up turning it into the story of Viz, but the title hung around for years and Alex kept saying that I should do a show about swearing. Because it’s what I’ve spent a lot of my life doing.

“With the new show I’ve gone into something that I have a lot to say about and I’ve thrown in other stuff that I’ve learnt along the way. I’m going to teach the audience the values of swearing, how you can use swearing, how dangerous swearing is and some of the history of swearing.”

Donald is recording the DVD at the Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff, on Tuesday 18 December in a double header with Tony Law, who is also recording his new show that night.

He explained: “It’s all happening at Chapter Arts, as that’s the usual home for recording purposes for Cardiff-based Go Faster Stripe, the fantastic comedy DVD specialists.”

“I’ve done the show once since Edinburgh and really enjoyed it – a double header with Michael Legge in London. It was a better show than I remembered it being, and I’ve now added a couple of lines that I just hadn’t thought of until I revisited the material.”

The DVD will effectively be Donald’s first ‘proper’ release, as his previous DVD – also with Go Faster Stripe – was recorded at the Live Theatre by two documentary crews who just happened to be filming and captured the show between them.

He added: “It’s lovely to be doing it with Mr Tony [Law] too; he’s a lovely fella, mad as a box of frogs, but that’s the way I like my comedians.”
