A series of charity shows at the Edinburgh Fringe face cancellation after the venue pulled the plug less than a week before the festival begins.

Yesterday, Katie Yossarian was informed by St Bride’s that her four Catch Comedy showcases would not be going ahead as planned – following a complaint about Kunt and the Gang’s inclusion in her brochure blurb.

However even when she reluctantly agreed to remove Kunt and the Gang from the billing, the council-owned venue insisted the showcase find a home elsewhere.

Speaking to Giggle Beats, Yossarian said: “18 days before I was supposed to enjoy what should be one of the best weeks of the year, my venue called up to inform me that one of the acts on the bill had offended someone.

“Despite my show being billed as 16+, the council-owned venue were worried about their reputations and decided to pull the show, which is in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.”

The showcase was due to run from Monday 13th until Friday 17th August, with Patrick Monahan, Dan Mitchell, Simon Donald and Kunt and the Gang all scheduled to perform for charity.

Yossarian added: “I have spent a lot of time and money organising this event, and am gutted to think it may have all been for nothing.”

St Bride’s are yet to comment.

Last summer, Kunt and the Gang were forced to make a formal apology after attaching stickers of penises to posters at the festival, causing what Fringe organisers perceived to be thousands of pounds worth of damage.

UPDATE:

Following yesterday’s article, Yossarian’s Catch Comedy Showcase has found a new home: Cafe Camino, 7.30pm, 13-17th – though Kunt and the Gang are still banned…

The festival organisers are far more concerned with profit and good PR than pushing the boundaries of comedy and the arts these days. To call it the Fringe is surely a trade descriptions violation now.
