Mick Ferry talks stand-up, his first ever gig, comparisons with Les Dawson
Manchester stand-up Mick Ferry has been speaking to the Hull Daily Mail ahead of his appearance at Hull City Hall later this month. Below are some of the highlights.
On leaving his job as an upholsterer to try his hand at stand-up:
“I got to that age [Ferry is 46] where I wanted to try something different. I didn’t want to get to 40 and feel like I hadn’t done anything. I wouldn’t say I was the funniest kid at school or anything – that’s not for me to judge is it? But maybe I was the most annoying. I messed about a lot. So I thought: ‘Why not mess around on stage and see if anyone else finds it funny?’
“I’ve got the best job in the world now. I basically get paid for talking a load of old cobblers. What better job is there than that? I certainly don’t want to go back to getting up at 6am and working 12-hour shifts as an upholsterer. That was hard, hard, work. This is easy peasy by comparison.
On his first ever gig at the Frog and Bucket in Manchester:
“I was so drunk I can’t remember much of it. I turned up early and the guy said, ‘you’re not on until midnight’, so I spent the next three hours getting trollied. I’m not sure how it went, to be honest. But I went back for more, which is the main thing.”
On comparisons with Les Dawson:
“It’s very kind of people to say. It’s an honour to be compared to someone like that. But I’m not so sure, I don’t think I’m a patch on him. I think someone once said I have a lugubrious face, so maybe we’ve got that in common. We’ve both got miserable faces.”
