Geordie street cred will be on the line at a concept show on Tyneside next month - as six local stand-ups compete in a rap battle.

Created by The Wee Man and Ro Campbell, Comedian Rap Battle debuted at the Edinburgh Fringe last year with the likes of Mark Watson, Carl Donnelly and Daniel Sloss taking part – and the show is now crossing the border to The Stand in Newcastle on Sunday 22 June.

Viz creator Simon Donald and Ideal star Seymour Mace will replay their first rap battle from last year’s Fringe, which was captured for posterity on video and uploaded to YouTube.

The first round saw Mace suggest that Simon’s brother, Chris, was responsible for all of the good things in Viz, while Donald took aim at Seymour’s ‘personal issues’.

Speaking to Giggle Beats about the rematch at The Stand, Donald said: “The first round in Edinburgh last summer was my most enjoyable festival gig ever; it was like going to see one of my favourite comics only to find his set was entirely about me, because it was.”

Responding to the suggestion that Mace won the first round, Donald continued: “Seymour set the bar last time; I was just his apprentice, so this time it’ll be like that bit in Kung Fu when Grasshopper chins his master and fucks off on his adventures.”

John Scott, Gavin Webster, Si Buglass and Giggle Beats Comedy Quiz host Lee Kyle will also compete in the show.

Kyle, who is up against Buglass, said: “I am quite lucky to be up against Si as he has a vast number of flaws for me to magnify.”

Comedian Rap Battle is at The Stand in Newcastle on 22 June. Tickets  are on sale now, priced £6 or £4 for concessions. The show is standing only; there is no seating available.
