The Hyena makes a comeback

Newcastle’s longest running comedy club, The Hyena, has announced its line-up for the coming months.

The impressive new programme sees the likes of Mick Ferry, Jarred Christmas, Adam Bloom, Silky and Daliso Chaponda head to Leazes Lane, as the venue aims to prove it is a viable alternative to the nearby Stand Comedy Club on High Bridge.

The Hyena, where Ross Noble made his debut when he was just 15, was thought to be in financial trouble last year, but responded to rumours with a new refurbishment, while Jesterval Comedy Festival organiser David Hadingham was brought on board to programme events.

Hadingham told Giggle Beats: “I like to think I know the comedy business relatively well, and what makes people laugh, and by the same token who makes people laugh.

“Being in the business so long you see so many comedians who you know are exceptional but for one reason or another might never get on TV. So we’re hoping the general public will come out and see them at The Hyena instead.”

Hadingham also confirmed that plans are also afoot for Newcastle’s first weekly gong show starting in September.

He added: “We’re very keen to encourage newcomers. We want to help people progress in comedy, and ultimately help make this the best city for live stand-up in the UK.”

The Hyena holds shows every Friday and Saturday on Leazes Lane, Newcastle. Tickets are £11-£12. For information on individual shows visit: thehyena.com
