Hebburn will not be renewed for a third series, writer Jason Cook has confirmed.

Despite stars such as Chris Ramsey, who played Jack, encouraging fans to campaign for more episodes of the show, Cook today confirmed that the show has been cancelled after two series.

Although attracting a significant fan base, Hebburn received a mixed critical reception, with The Guardian’s Dominic Sandbrook writing: “It’s still not exactly subtle comedy, but the first episode of the new run turned out to have more gags than the whole of the first series combined.”

The Independent’s Ellen E Jones branded the series “a relic from a different era”, writing that it was an “untaxing sitcom in which the gentle laughs are so predictable that you could set your pacemaker by them.”

Cook said that he was grateful to the BBC for allowing him the opportunity to make Hebburn, which was based upon his own experiences of growing up in the South Tyneside town.

“It was such an honour to be able to put my little hometown on the TV and to show the country a little bit of Tyneside with some of the best actors I could ever have dreamed of.”

Cook says that he hopes to work again with the Hebburn team in the future.

The show starred Chris Ramsey, Kimberley Nixon, Jim Moir and Gina McKee, who recently won a Royal Television Society award for her performance in the show.
