Standing up for international peace
Comedians in Newcastle, Manchester and Leeds are performing today in support of the United Nations’ International Day of Peace.
Northern comedy clubs are joining over 50 comedy venues across the globe to support ‘Stand-Up For International Peace’, part of the UN’s International Day of Peace, which is celebrated every year on 21 September.
Brendon Burns will appear at the Newcastle Stand alongside a range of comics, including Alfie Joey, who is hosting tonight’s show.
The Comedy Store in Manchester and Highlight in Leeds will also support the day, according to the website ThnkPeace.net, joining thousands of global events.
The UN’s website says that the day, first observed in 1982, was designed to as “a method of strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.”
In 2001, the General Assembly adopted a resolution to establish the Day of Peace as an annual day of non-violence and cease-fire.
