Bouncers, John Godber’s comedy play about Northern nightlife, opens in Durham this week.

The fast-paced show first premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1977, and features four actors who between them portray a variety of characters on the average Friday night out in a northern town.

The cast includes Adrian Hood and David MacCreedy, who both starred in TV drama Preston Front, Emmerdale and Waterloo Road cast member Matthew Ganley, and Zach Lee, who starred in the West End production of Bouncers.

And the play opens at the Durham Gala Theatre on Thursday 5 September for three nights.

Director Gareth Tudor-Price has directed several past productions of the play, including a run in the West End.

Tudor-Price, who recently directed A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Durham, said: “I seized the invitation by the Gala to bring the show to the North East.”

The show sees Baz, Sexy Suzy and their mates as they enjoy their night out under the watchful eye of the bouncers.

From the hairdressers and the ritual of getting ready to the packed pubs and nightclub to the drunken chat up lines and freezing 2am taxi queues, the play brings together the rituals of urban nightlife.

Bouncers runs at the Durham Gala Theatre from 5-7 September 2013.
