GB Comedy Quiz: May’s prizes revealed

Think you know your comedy? Like pub quizzes? Then the inaugural Giggle Beats Comedy Quiz – Monday 6 May at The Hancock, Newcastle – is the perfect night for you.

Similar to a normal pub quiz night (except you don’t need to know what year James Joyce wrote The Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man), there’ll be a general knowledge section, a music round (with a difference), an intriguing picture round, a caption competition and a few other bits and bobs. All good fun.

The quiz itself kicks off at 8pm, but we advise you arrive for 7.30pm; you get to listen to some banging tunes before the show and, since we only have a limited amount of space, you won’t be the person we have to turn away five minutes before the quiz starts.

And the prizes? Here’s a taste of what we’re giving away, courtesy of The Stand Comedy Club, comedy distributors Go Faster Stripe and the Comedy Advertising Network:

  • Tickets for Reginald D Hunter’s new show at the Mill Volvo Tyne Theatre in June.
  • Gary Delaney tour tickets for his performance at The Stand Comedy Club, Newcastle.
  • £25 bar tab redeemable at The Hancock.
  • The latest comedy releases from Go Faster Stripe, including Fist of Fun series two and Robin Ince: Happiness Through Science.
  • Annual memberships for The Stand Comedy Club, Newcastle.
  • Tickets for the next comedy quiz on 3 June.
  • A ‘special’ wooden spoon prize (which is definitely crap…)

We also have a short stand-up section from So You Think You’re Funny runner-up Jonathan Pelham, who’ll be making your face ache (with laughter) while we count up the scores. In a review earlier this year, Giggle Beats described him as “an act to watch out for in the future.”

The review went on to say: “Darting between tales of tongue-tied adolescence and observational cracks about text speak, his jokes rarely fail to land, but it’s the material of a more delicate, potentially humiliating nature that marks Pelham out. Taking advantage of his amiable stage presence to lull the crowd into a false sense of security, Pelham closes his set with a chancy twist about a prom date – which pays off in spades.”

And now to the boring bits; entry is £2 (you really are getting all this for two quid), the maximum amount of people you can have in a team is six, and if you’re caught cheating we reserve the right to stick you in the corner and shoot peas at you.

Yup, think that’s everything.
