The damaged Eric Morecambe statue is to be returned to its rightful spot next month.

The statue was removed by the council on 11 October after a man sawed off Eric’s leg in an attempted theft. He was arrested but released without charge, and later sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

But, with the help of original sculptor Graham Ibbeson, repairs to ‘Eric’ are almost complete and the statue will return to the town’s seafront on Thursday 11 December.

The statue will travel up to Morecambe from a London foundry on the Wednesday night and work to re-install ‘Eric’ will then begin.

There will be a re-unveiling ceremony on the Thursday, expected at around 2pm.

Ibbeson said: “We’ve pulled out all the stops. We want to make sure Eric is as pristine as he can be.”
