Viz co-creator Simon Donald is to appear in Newcastle on Friday as part of the Live Theatre’s 40th birthday celebrations.

The Geordie stand-up will take part in a music-cum-storytelling night called Singles Club, hosted by comedian Mr Drayton.

The night, based on Mr Drayton’s Record Player shows, sees participants pick their favourite vinyl single and explain their choice in three minutes.

At the end of the night, the audience vote for their favourite and the winner will walk away with a much coveted trophy – and a cash prize of five English pounds.

Simon told Giggle Beats: “I’ve picked a single that says everything about being a teenager, without saying anything.

“I’ll also be touching on just how important records were in our young lives, and how hearing them triggers so much without us knowing – until those memories are forever tarnished…”

A number of local figures will appear at the show alongside Donald, including Hebburn actor Steffen Peddie, Lindisfarne drummer Ray Laidlaw and David ‘Jaff’ Craig of The Futureheads.

Organiser Mr Drayton said: “The beauty of the Singles Club is that everyone has a favourite single or song; something that takes them – and the audience – to another place.

“Throw in some great stories from some of the region’s best writers, performers and entertainers and you’re on to a winner.

“It’s always a good humoured and fun evening, backed up with some stonking tunes.”

The show starts at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £7.
