Review: The Geordie Comedy Gala – Baltic Square, Gateshead Quays
Hebburn‘s Steffen Peddie compered this showcase of the North East’s prodigious comedy talent in the slightly unusual setting of a marquee festooned with chandeliers and drapes.
Not to mention the gentle sounds of the Tyne lapping against Gateshead Quays and the tooting horns of passing party boats.
Tonight’s gala was kicked off by Seymour Mace, with his uniquely surreal and irreverent style that culminated in a hilariously mimed performance of “Midnight Train To Georgia.” We’d be spoiling by revealing any more, but it’s safe to say that Mace delivers one of the best performances of the night.
Next up wired Mike Milligan shared his satirical insights into the biting political issues of today, spectacularly dismantling David Cameron’s claim to be ‘middle class’ rather than the posh, privileged pseudo-aristocrat he so clearly is.
Zoe McPhilley’s character comedy was wonderfully weird, getting a somewhat dubious audience onside with her quirky take on, amongst other things, bran flakes, the BNP, and the age old conflict of dogs versus cats.
Dave Johns is a familiar face to regulars at North East comedy clubs, and didn’t disappoint with his brand of Jack-Dee-meets-Rhod-Gilbert humour, coupled with x-rated moments like his rendition of “Goldfinger”.
Perfect for a slightly tipsy audience like this.
Closing the show, Jason Cook took the atmosphere up a notch, striking comedy gold and carrying the audience along with him as he uncovered the story of how two of their unsuspecting members had met on a blind date, then ambling conversationally through his memories of growing up in Hebburn.
All in all, a great showcase for the North East.
