Review: Justin Moorhouse: Justin Time – Newcastle Stand
Perhaps best known for his role as Manchester City fan ‘Young Kenny’ in Phoenix Nights, Justin Moorhouse mournfully clarifies that he is in fact a Manchester United supporter – and his side’s much anticipated European fixture has undoubtedly affected ticket sales tonight in this city of football worship.
However Moorhouse does not allow any internal resentment to pollute his performance, showcasing the kind of professionalism which has earned him a glowing reputation. His charm, likeability and uncompromising willingness to ridicule himself are perhaps his greatest traits, as they allow him to craft a favourable and receptive audience.
Justin demonstrates an astute awareness of his demographic, connecting brilliantly with the high percentage of parents in the audience as he recounts the overseeing of a child’s life: from ‘fun’ half term excursions, to being the oldest at a gig by decades, perving on your child’s mate’s mum, and discovering the first used condom (the latter proves a particular hit with The Stand, though apparently not his wife).
At times Moorhouse’s originality does seem somewhat depleted by the demands of such a lengthy set, and he is guilty of resorting to rudimentary gags about his weight. Yet even his most formulaic of quips are – to an extent – redeemed by his cordial company. And light-hearted references to the show’s poor turn-out foster a warm and intimate atmosphere on a night that could have been a damp squib for the performer.
Justin Moorhouse has had better gigs than tonight’s showing in Newcastle, but it’s still a good effort on his part, demonstrating a level of professionalism and pedigree worth writing home about.
Let’s just hope his next gig at The Stand doesn’t clash with the Tyne-Wear derby, eh?
