Preview: Fuckwits
After a month of eating shit, drinking shit and shitting shit , Simon Donald and his Fuckwitted comedy mates are back at the Newcastle Stand this Sunday – and it’s set to be a belter.
In case you didn’t know, Fuckwits is the world’s most clueless game show.
Hosted by Simon and devised by his Viz pal Alex Collier, comedians and audience members join forces to find, fashion or fabricate answers to incomplete puzzles and questions. Like this:
What started out as a joke on Alex’s Facebook account – he’d put blank crossword puzzles up and get his mates to fill them in – has descended into a chaotic, often brilliant panel show, with interactive word searches, picture puzzles, and (my personal favourite) a ‘define that word’ round.
“Really, the idea is to give comedians a vehicle to argue with each other,” says Simon. “When they start intersecting that’s when it gets interesting.”
Since its inception in April 2012, the show’s endured ropey schedule changes and on the spot tweaks to its ever-developing format.
But Fuckwits looks to have finally found its feet in a Sunday afternoon slot, steered by Donald and his two team captains, Gavin Webster and Steffen Peddie (Hebburn).
The show has even caught the eye of BBC comedy bosses, who’ve snapped up the format as part of their development programme.
However, for now at least, the only place you can see it is at the Newcastle Stand; and, according to Collier, that’s where it’ll be for at least the next six months.
So if you’re bored out of your mind this Sunday afternoon – you will be, it’s a Sunday – then Fuckwits gets the thumbs up from us. As too does the Newcastle Stand’s Sunday dinners, by the way. They’re proper lovely.
Nothing shit about them.
Tickets for Fuckwits are available from the Newcastle Stand’s website: thestand.co.uk. The show starts at 2pm.
