Comedians to walk Hadrian’s Wall for North East charity
Hadrian’s Wall is the unlikely setting for one of the biggest charity comedy events in 2013.
Comedy promoter Nick Banks and 21 other comedians, including Martin Mor, Patrick Monahan, Silky and Ian Cognito, have taken up a unique challenge to walk the full length of Hadrian’s Wall.
The comedians will take six days to walk the 84 mile distance (135 km) from Bowness-on- Solway in Cumbria to Wallsend on Tyneside.
And on each night of their walk, they will put on a comedy gig to increase funds for the Newcastle Healthcare Charity.
Organiser Nick Banks explained: “My best friend’s two year old son, Harry Readman, has been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease.
“The treatment and support given to him and to my friend and his partner by the staff at the Great North Children’s Hospital at the Royal Victoria Infirmary has been truly amazing, and I just wanted to say thank you by trying to raise as much as possible for this fantastic charity.”
The walk will begin on Thursday 28 March at the Hope & Anchor Inn in Bowness-on-Solway, before trips to Carlisle, Newton, Greenhead, Chollerford, Heddon on the Wall and one final show in Newcastle on Thursday 3 April.
Banks, who runs Rib Ticklers comedy club in Cleveland, added: ”It’s going to be a tough challenge, but we hope to lighten the mood with comedy.
“We’ll be releasing full details closer to the time, but we’re announcing it now as we’d love as many people as possible to stick the dates in their diaries to come along, support us and give generously to such a deserving cause.”
The Paediatric Nephrology unit at Newcastle’s RVI provides treatment for over 1800 children each year, with referrals from all over the North East of England as well as Berwick, Cumbria and North Yorkshire.
The Children and Young People’s Kidney Fund supports the unit by raising money for new and innovative medical equipment, enhanced staff training, research projects and patient entertainment and activities, including treats for the children at Christmas.
The fund is administered by the Newcastle Healthcare Charity (Reg No 502473), one of two official charities supporting the work of Newcastle’s hospitals.
